(DESOTO COUNTY, Fla.)- In a case of domestic violence, a 37-year-old deaf mother, referred to here as Gloria to protect her identity, sought the free legal help of Florida Rural Legal Services (FRLS) to obtain a permanent injunction against her abusive husband. The mother, who communicated using a relay service, was a dedicated parent to her nine-year-old son and her 17-year-old daughter.

Gloria reached out to FRLS in connection with a permanent injunction hearing is a legal proceeding where a court determines whether to grant a long-term order, known as a permanent injunction, to prohibit her abusive husband from engaging in certain actions. This type of injunction is typically sought in cases involving harassment, domestic violence, or other situations where an individual needs protection from another person.

FRLS accepted her case for representation, and the attorney was pleased to learn that the Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center (SPARCC) was providing support to the family.

Gloria had been married to her husband for more than seven years when the abuse began. As the violence escalated, she sought help from SPARCC, which informed her that FRLS could provide the crucial legal services she needed.

Police reports indicated that law enforcement responded to calls for assistance in September 2022 and February 2023, further highlighting the severity of the situation. The dedicated FRLS team worked diligently to secure a permanent injunction for Gloria and her children, aiming to protect them from further harm.

A permanent injunction is a court order, and violation of its terms can lead to legal consequences for the respondent, including potential arrest or fines.

This case underscores the importance of legal support for victims of domestic violence. If you or someone you know is facing similar circumstances, consider reaching out to FRLS for assistance. Their commitment to providing free legal services can be a vital resource for families seeking safety and justice.
