(FORT MYERS, Fla.) — In the wake of recent hurricanes, many homeowners are facing the daunting task of repairing their properties. However, it is crucial to avoid falling victim to home repair fraud. Florida Rural Legal Services (FRLS) offers guidance on how to protect yourself from shady contractors.

Get Multiple Bids

Homeowners should seek written bids or estimates from at least three different contractors. This practice helps in comparing prices and services, ensuring you get a fair deal.

Verify the Contractor

Before hiring, obtain the contractor's full name, address, and phone number. Ask for references and make sure to call them. Additionally, check with the Better Business Bureau and local courthouse for any criminal history or civil cases against the contractor. Be cautious of contractors with out-of-state license plates.

Written Contracts are Crucial

For repairs costing more than $10,000, request a copy of the contractor’s Certificate of Registration with the Texas Residential Construction Commission. Always get a written contract specifying the work to be done and the price. Never sign anything you do not understand.

Control Your Payments

Avoid paying for the entire job upfront. It is advisable to pay as little as possible initially. In disaster areas, it is illegal for contractors to take any money upfront unless they have maintained a local office in your county or an adjacent county for at least one year. Wait to pay the full amount until the work is completed and you have inspected it thoroughly. Never pay in cash.

If you suspect a contractor is attempting to defraud you, contact FRLS to see if you qualify for free disaster legal services. These FREE legal services are funded by a grant through Legal Services Corporation.
