(FORT MYERS, FLA.)- In a move to bolster disaster resilience in lower-income communities, FRLS Staff Attorney Kevin Sarlo has assumed the esteemed position of Disaster Resilience Program Fellow, which is a fellowship funded by Equal Justice Works. This innovative role helps to address the critical need for legal aid in the aftermath of disasters, where lower-income communities often face heightened challenges and increased inequality.
The Disaster Resilience Program (DRP) stands as a beacon of hope, mobilizing both seasoned lawyers, referred to as Attorney Fellows, and aspiring law students, known as Student Fellows. Together, they provide free civil legal aid in disaster-prone areas, ensuring that vital legal services are not just accessible but also tailored to the unique needs of individuals, families, and communities. The overarching goal is to stabilize lives and rebuild communities with resilience at their core.
Kevin Sarlo expressed his enthusiasm for the fellowship, emphasizing its potential impact on disaster-related legal issues. Throughout the program, Sarlo will benefit from extensive training, technical assistance, and mentorship, empowering him to navigate the complexities of disaster legal matters.
"This fellowship will give me the opportunity to specialize in disaster-related legal issues and to collaborate with lawyers around the country who are facing similar challenges," Sarlo shared. "I am excited to share this knowledge with the entire FRLS family. Together, we can help our community not only heal from Hurricane Ian but strengthen to face whatever lies ahead."
Sarlo's multifaceted role as a Disaster Resilience Program Fellow involves engaging in outreach and education initiatives, providing direct legal services to disaster survivors, and fostering crucial relationships within the community. His dedication to strengthening disaster resilience aligns seamlessly with the mission of Equal Justice Works and the broader commitment of FRLS to serve and uplift communities in times of need.
