(IMMOKALEE, Fla.)- Florida Rural Legal Services, Inc. (FRLS) and community partners are mobilizing relief efforts for Hurricane Ian survivors in Immokalee who have been dubbed "the forgotten," migrant farmworkers.
"Much of the rebuilding in Florida after Hurricane Ian will be done by migrant workers, but many of them right now feel overlooked by relief efforts," reports WUSF.
That’s where the non-profit law firm FRLS comes in.
The Immokalee Disaster Relief event, which is set for Saturday, Oct. 29 from 11 a.m.- 5 p.m. at the Amigos Center at 106 South 2nd Street, will bring various social services, governmental agencies, and community non-profit organizations directly to the farm-working community.
These resources are crucial because it appears that the only Disaster Recovery Center location in Collier County, at this time, is at the Veterans Community Park in Naples, Fla., which is too far for many of the farmworkers in Collier County.
"Farmworkers will be able to safely obtain disaster relief resources such as, but not limited to, information regarding public benefits, medical care, educational materials, and giveaways for adults and children," said Tia Haggar, managing attorney for FRLS.
A growing list of participating agencies will be updated daily, leading up to the event.
The aftermath of Hurricane Ian is widespread and is expected to impact communities and regions substantially for months - even years to come. So we have plenty of work to get done.
