(IMMOKALEE, Fla.)- The chronic disease of diabetes continues to plague many migrant farmworkers in Immokalee, Fla., who reside in rural, low-income households with limited access to health insurance and nutritious foods.
According to the Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration, farmworkers work long hours in demanding conditions and often lack basic housing and kitchen accommodations for food storage and preparation. Their housing and work sites are isolated, and they frequently lack vehicles or driver’s licenses, which may limit access to healthy food sources.
Clinicians from Core Health Partners, Help a Diabetic Child, and University of Florida Health have partnered with Florida Rural Legal Services, Inc. (FRLS) to provide free health services and screenings to farmworkers at a Diabetes Awareness Health Fair on Saturday, Jan. 21 from 10 a.m. – noon.
“The inherent mobile nature of a migratory agricultural worker makes it difficult for farmworkers to access proper health care and social services,” said Jaffe Pickett, Executive Director/CEO of FRLS. “Our Migrant Unit has identified gaps in services and has worked diligently to bring community partners together through our statewide migrant services. This critical event, to be held at our Immokalee office, will include valuable partners to ensure we are meeting the needs of farmworkers forged at the intersection of healthcare and civil legal assistance related to legal and medical issues. FRLS will ensure services are readily accessible to farmworkers who wouldn’t otherwise have access to our services without these critical outreach events.”
The free event is open to the public and will take place at 106 S. 2nd Street, in Immokalee. It will focus on improving overall health and will include information on healthy living, and much more.
“It is critical to have events such as these on particular dates, times, and locations that are safe and easily accessible for farmworkers, which is why we are hosting the event this Saturday at the Amigos Center where many farmworkers already visit in order to obtain a variety of services throughout the year,” said Tia Haggar, managing attorney of FRLS’ Migrant Unit.
