(FORT MYERS, Fla.) – In an effort to support the homeless and veteran populations in Lee County, Florida Rural Legal Services (FRLS) collaborated with the Lee County Homeless Coalition, Inc. during the 24th annual Homeless Service Day & Veterans Stand Down on Saturday, Jan. 27.
Attorney Roberto Suarez, representing FRLS’ Low Income Tax Clinic, played a crucial role in this impactful outreach event held in Fort Myers. The collaboration aimed to provide essential services to those in need and extend support to the community.
The event, hosted at City of Palms Park, saw a gathering of various agencies and civic organizations offering free services to individuals experiencing homelessness or veterans. Attendees had access to provisions for food, hygiene kits, backpacks, haircuts, and information on VA benefits. Additionally, referrals for substance abuse and mental health counseling were available.
As part of the event, the Lee County Homeless Coalition, along with Lee County Human and Veteran Services and dedicated community volunteers, conducted the Annual Homeless Census. This initiative provides critical information on the extent of homelessness in the community.
The concept of a "Stand Down" for homeless veterans originated from the military practice of providing a safe retreat for units returning from combat operations. This initiative allowed battle-weary soldiers to renew their spirit, health, and overall well-being.
The Lee County Homeless Coalition, a non-profit organization, comprises community and faith-based service providers, local businesses, individuals with current or past experiences of homelessness, and advocates committed to ending homelessness. The coalition's mission is to advocate, educate, and promote awareness of issues facing homeless individuals in Lee County through community collaboration, planning, and implementing solutions.
FRLS extends gratitude to the Lee County Homeless Coalition for the opportunity to contribute to this meaningful event. Together, through collaborative efforts, they continue to make a positive impact on the community.
